How do I view the therapeutic relationship?
I envision psychotherapy as a collaborative process rather than
a situation where I am the unquestioned expert and you are the patient.
Therapy is a safe and confidential place to examine your anxieties,
distress, fears, memories, relationships, dreams, strengths, longings,
aspirations and successes. Together, we explore the patterns of
your past, understand the issues that shape your present, and work
to make positive changes for your future.
What are the theories that will shape our work
together?
Contemporary psychoanalytic theories form the conceptual base of
my training in clinical psychology. Thus, I believe that unconscious
thoughts, feelings and conflicts influence us on an ongoing basis
in complex and dynamic ways. In my opinion, understanding these
unconscious influences is the most effective way to make lasting,
positive changes in our behaviors and attitudes.
Family systems and developmental theories also influence my work
as a therapist. I will work with you to uncover the systemic patterns
in your family of origin and how those patterns continue to influence
your relationships in the present. Examining developmental phases
and life transitions is also an important aspect of my approach.
Although my training over the past two decades has been primarily
psychodynamic, I use many cognitive-behavioral interventions in
my work as a therapist and coach. I believe that emotional insight
is important, but that insight must be combined with action for
therapy to be successful. Making concrete shifts in your daily habits
will help you achieve your goals.
Where should we start?
I offer psychotherapy at my office in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
If you live in the area, and would like to consider working with
me, I suggest beginning with a consultation.
