Not sure what you need?

There are three common reasons for a consultation:

  • To evaluate your difficulties, assess your strengths and weaknesses, and provide feedback about how to make positive changes.
  • To meet a few times to work on a particular difficulty.
  • To see whether psychotherapy or coaching would be an appropriate way to work together on an ongoing basis.

How Does It Work?

Typically, a consultation will consist of two to three sessions that include comprehensive evaluation and feedback. At the end of our consultation, you may expect concrete ideas for tackling your difficulties. At this time, we can also decide whether and how we may be able to work together.

In-Person Consultations: If you are able to meet in-person at my office - located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina - we can consider together whether your situation would be best addressed by psychotherapy or coaching. Psychotherapy is conducted only face-to-face.

Telephone Consultations: If you live in another part of the country, my coaching services are available by telephone and email. After our first telephone session, I will send you forms that ask about your academic challenges, your educational history, and your background. This will help us quickly gain a comprehensive overview of your situation and a plan for how I can be of help.

Consultations may be a few sessions or lead to ongoing work together: Many academics choose to speak with me a few times to get advice about how to tackle a specific issue. Whether it is a particularly challenging writing task, a question about which career direction to take next, a political difficulty with a colleague or advisor, or a non-work problem, I am happy to help you meet the challenge successfully. Coaching can be a short-term process, or it can be an ongoing, supportive relationship to help you to achieve important life goals.

Fees: My full fee for individual psychotherapy or coaching is $125 per 50 minute session, although a sliding scale is available. Psychotherapy expenses are often partially covered by health insurance policies. Coaching is not covered by insurance because it does not address medical issues.

Other Options: If you cannot afford to work with me on an individual basis, or if you are seeking increased peer support, you may be interested in my coaching groups. Most semesters, I facilitate a variety of workshops, both in-person and by teleconference, for both students and faculty.
